Tim Mahoney, owner of Edina Handyman, is a second-generation Edina native. “My mom was raised in the Country Club neighborhood of Edina,” explained Mahoney. “After my mom and dad got married, they settled in Edina where they raised my five siblings and me. Apart from college, I’ve lived in Edina my entire life,” he says. Mahoney and his wife Sheila have 2 children that have grown up in Edina too.

Mahoney became a handyman through a unique and unconventional route. He started his professional career as a lawyer after graduating from William Mitchell School of Law. “I started with a very traditional career path, I practiced law for 9 years at both a large downtown law firm and in-house for a large international corporation,” Mahoney explained. From the practice of the law, Mahoney moved to legal recruiting, placement and headhunting for the next 20 years. After going through several corporate reorganizations, he decided to strike out on his own and established Edina Handyman, a company focused on personal service to homeowners in the Edina and Southwest Minneapolis area. “My wife Sheila loves to tell everyone – Yep Attorney to Handyman,” said Mahoney laughing. 

“I had always done home maintenance, repair and remodeling on the various houses we’ve owned and for family and friends. Sheila and I also flipped a house in Edina after fixing it up. I find working on household projects very gratifying,” Mahoney explained. In thinking about what kind of business he wanted to start he reviewed where his skills and abilities were strongest. “I like working with and helping people. In addition, I had a strong background in business operations, sales and marketing and thought there was a niche in the marketplace for handyman-type services,” said Mahoney. He combined his experience in home improvement with his business background and developed the Edina Handyman brand.  

“I wanted to be a bit more current than many of the existing providers of these types of services. I wanted to leverage social media and modern marketing techniques to connect with existing and newer homeowners. I developed a logo that incorporates the Edina hornet, a website that gets several hundred hits a month and utilizes web-related apps like “Nextdoor” that allows me to quickly connect with potential local clients,” Mahoney described.
